Martin GoodwillMartin Goodwill came through an Indian onslaught to lift the 2009 European Open and the first prize of in Duffel, defeating Dhruv Sitwala for the second time this season in an EBOS final. This latest impressive victory takes his season's tally of titles on the European Tour to three, and ensured he finished top of the rankings for the 2008/09 season. Sitwala, who defeated fellow professional and countryman Devendra Joshi in the semis captured as runner-up, and the high break prize for his magnificent effort of 309 early on in the group stages.

Neither player really settled in the final, both finding the conditions difficult.  Although the venue was fabulous and had excellent facilities, it was not air-conditioned and by now the extremely warm environment was affecting play. This, combined with the very tight-pocketed tables and perhaps the pressure of the later stages of the Championship, led to a much lower scoring rate than the earlier matches.  Goodwill came through with some losing hazard play, to take the match.

In taking this latest title, Goodwill has surely shown that whilst being one of the worlds best amateur players he is able to fight and defeat some of the games foremost professional's, a record that not many can boast.

Goodwill qualified in high scoring fashion (601 average match score) for the quarter finals, along with the other three eventual semi-finalists (Sitwala, Sethi, Joshi), all of whom topped their respective groups. In the quarter finals Geet Sethi ran riot over Matthew Sutton aided with a break of 301, but this form would soon desert him when facing Goodwill in the semi final.

Inaugural Belgian player Martin Spoormans showed he was no slouch finishing third in his group, and recorded a maiden EBOS century totalling 123 against Dhruv Sitwala only to be just piped to the match win within the final ten minutes. His break consisted mainly of cannons, and was spectacular to watch.

Michael Wright took the honours in the plate defeating good friend and sparring partner Brian Moffatt in an entertaining final, rewarded with for his efforts.

Playing aside, EBSA (in conjunction with EBOS) put 9 additional trainee referee's (5 from Belgium) through their paces and examined them over the course of the tournament, all of which were awarded a Grade 3 EBSA Billiards certification.
